In an effort to spice up the serious and business-like i8, BMW announced the launch of a new limited edition version of the car in the UK. It is called the BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition, and if you think it’s just a normal i8 with a red paint job… well, you’re right.

The pain work on this car is a Protonic Red finish with Frozen Grey metallic accents, complemented with W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels painted in Orbit Grey metallic. The cool thing about BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition is that it has done away with all those signature blue accents regular i8s feature. It has resulted in a more uniform, more luxurious look, and made the car appear more fun. The car also comes with an exclusive interior, featuring red double-stitching and exclusive carbon fibre and ceramic trims.

Apart from the aforementioned changes, BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition is a standard car, meaning it is powered by a sophisticated hybrid powertrain consisting of turbocharged three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine and a couple of electric motors. The combined output of the system is 360 horsepower which is good for a top speed of 155 mph. Theoretically, the i8 should do 113 mpg, and offer 22 miles and a top speed of 75mph on electric power alone. In reality though, the owners are not getting anywhere near those figures.

The limited edition Protonic Red i8 goes on sale from September priced at £112,535.
