So after what felt like a year’s worth of teasers, most of them good to be honest, Mercedes-Benz finally revealed the new track-focused Mercedes AMG GT R at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is a little bit less powerful than we were hoping, but it looks every bit as beastly as they’d said it would.

Dressed in the new “AMG green hell magno” the 2017 Mercedes AMG GT R is powered by an uprated version of the regular version’s 4.0 liter V8 with an extra 70bhp and a much, much nastier soundtrack. But increased power is only part of what makes the R a Green Hell beast. In true Black Series fashion, although it is not called that, the tracks have been widened on both axles, and the car’s been fitted with active rear-wheel steering, the nine-way adjustable traction control system and the adjustable coil-over suspension with additional electronic control.

All of that, in addition to a massive body kit with large front splitter and a huge rear diffuser plus a fixed rear wing, means Mercedes AMG GT R is poised and ready to take on the likes of Porsche 991 GT3 and whatever the upcoming track version of the Ferrari 488 is called. The car is still rear-wheel-drive and has the same AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7?speed dual-clutch transmission, but with 585 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, and lighter weight, it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and flat out reach 318 km/h.

The design of the AMG GT R in influenced in large part by that of the actual GT3 version of the car and to some extent by Mercedes DTM cars. At the front you get a new bumper with some properly large and somewhat peculiar looking grilles, complemented with the new “AMG Panamericana” grille inspired by that of the 300 SL racing car that won the Panamericana race in 1952. Dominating the side view are the new strakes along with flared arches, while at the back the combination of the new diffuser and rear wing gives the car a true motorpsort look. Underneath and out of view are the R’s active aero features.
