If the reason you haven’t ordered a 2018 VW Atlas so far has been concerns about safety, well go ahead and place that order because this SUV is pretty much as safe as they come. That is what Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) attests to by giving the Atlas the 2017 Top Safety Pick award.

The Atlas SUV earned  “Good” ratings in IIHS crash tests evaluated in five categories: frontal impact moderate overlap; frontal impact small overlap; side impact; roof strength; and head restraints. And when equipped with the autonomous emergency braking system (AEB) it even gets an advanced rating (Superior) for front crash prevention. So yes, 2018 VW Atlas might be fairly ugly, and it may come from a company whose reputation is tainted with lies, but at least your kids will be safe in it.

It’s no wonder the Atlas performed so well in IIHS crash tests seeing as it can be specified with a long list of active and passive safety features. You get Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), front and rear Park Distance Control (ParkPilot), Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist); High Beam Control (Light Assist) and Overhead View Camera (Area View). There is also Automatic Post-Collision Braking System which applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage.
