BMW is recalling 2,500 2008 and 2009 M3s with the optional M DCT automated dual-clutch gearbox because the engine may stall at low speeds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The problem involves the double-clutch gearbox,” NHTSA said in its recall summary. “In a situation of rapid vehicle deceleration, the transmission software may perform a multistage downshift. In that situation, at low vehicle speeds, it is possible for the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW has rolled out its dual-clutch gearbox on all versions of the M3. For 2009, it’s optional on the convertible, coupe and sedan.

The recall will start sometime in November. BMW dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission electronic control unit with updated software for free. M3 owners can contact BMW at (800) 831-1117.
