Press Release : General Motors (GM) has been recognised for its pioneering work in introducing environmentally-friendly vehicles to the Middle East, by being named the inaugural winner of the Autocar Middle East magazine ‘Go Green’ Award.

Benefiting from the results of its innovative Energy Diversity policy, GM was the first car maker to approach the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) with a view to launching a hybrid vehicle evaluation scheme in the Emirate earlier this year. Five Chevrolet Malibu Hybrids and five Chevrolet Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid SUVs are currently being operated as part of the Dubai Taxis fleet.

The Award was presented to the new President of General Motors – Middle East Operations, Mike Devereux, during the Autocar Awards ceremony at the Madinat Arena in Dubai. Accepting the award, Mike Devereux commented: “GM is honoured to be the first winner of this award, and is equally proud to have been the first automotive manufacturer to bring hybrid technology to the Middle East, in close cooperation with the Dubai RTA and Dubai Taxis”

Damien Reid, Group Editor of Sports and Automotive for TMF Publishing which publishes Autocar Middle East magazine, commented: “The Autocar ‘Go Green’ Certificate is the first ever environmental initiative designed to recognize and honour those in the automotive industry who have made a positive contribution to the region. General Motors Middle East should be applauded for taking the lead and introducing the first hybrid vehicles to the region, in what we believe is a landmark step for the Middle East Automotive Industry.”
