For new M badged cars from BMW the award winning V10 engine is a No No, instead a 4.4 liter Bi-turbo V8 will be installed which delivers the same 500+ horsepower. First cars to get it are the X5M and X6M.
This engine only shares its block with the new V8 we’ve already seen in the X6 50i and the 750i, with M division treatment it becomes a different animal which can take these big SUVs from 0 to 100 km/h in well under 5 seconds but like always the top is limited to 250. The all-wheel-drive system has been revised and is linked to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
As for design, both cars get identical new aprons with bigger air intakes. That is a signature for the M division. 20 inch wheels also comes standard and the cars feature a pair of twin exhaust pipes at the back. Interior, too is the typical M. everything has a ‘sport’ added to it! sport seats, sport steering wheel, sport pedals … also you will find quit a lot of M badges!
This is a new experience for BMW, high-riding M-powered cars jacked up on big wheels! Mercedes has done it before with the ML 63 AMG, and that is a very cool car although they have not sold as many as they like! and it is still no match for the big names in this segment, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport. Now it’s BMW’s turn with X5 and X6 M, You think they work?!
