It’s not really an occasion when a production of one particular car ends because it’s being replaced by new model, but we’re not talking about an ordinary car here. It’s end of the line for the first generation Mercedes CLS, a revolutionary car which set a whole new niche in car design, a car so amazing that even after seven years since it was first seen, it still looks modern and crisp and cool and fabulous! Really it’s a shame they are going to replace it, but it’s inevitable.

The current model which is known internally as type C129 was the first car to introduce four-door coupe body style. The idea is you have a practical four-door saloon which looks like an elegant coupe. This concept quickly became the most popular trend in the automotive world that almost any major manufacturer tried to somehow copy it.

People also loved it all around the world. Since 2004 when it went on sale, more than 170,000 units of it have been sold. The very last one is a black CLS 550 with AMG styling pack which is destined for America. From Autumn the new generation codenamed C218 will go into production, which on the evidence of spyshots we’ve seen so far is very fine, but not just as groundbreaking.

The first gen Mercedes CLS was a magnificent car, a true history maker, one of the all time greatest.
