Even though BMW always wanted a real high performance version of the Z4 roadster, they’ve always been reluctant to give it a V8. The best they could do for the current Z4 was the twin-charged straight six engine with 300 hp. The latest offering for the sporty roadster will be the new twin-turbo 2.0 liter four-cylinder introduced in BMW X1 xDrive28i.
One may argue that a V8 would be overkill for the Z4, but Mercedes is putting a big V8 in the tiny SLK for years with great success. Four-cylinder engines cannot make a proper sports roadster! That said, this particular four-cylinder is a bit different. They have put two turbochargers on this 2.0 liter unit and the result is 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
So the idea is that you get good power, but because it’s only a 2.0 liter it’ll be efficient as well. It will probably replace the current 3.0 liter I6. The thing is though, figures are something, real world performance is something else. Sure 245 hp sounds like enough, but it certainly won’t be just as satisfying as a proper straight six.
BMW is yet to confirm official details of the upcoming four-cylinder Z4.
