As confirmed before Mercedes Benz is going to revamp its model range by 2015. One of the new model to be added is apparently a lightweight sporty E-Class.
This carbon fiber-bodied E-Class, according to AutoBild, will weigh something like 1,300 kg, which is 350 kg lighter than the conventional model.
The Mercedes E Superlight will be a sports saloon, powered by hybrid or fuel cell powertrain, with a unique design reminiscent of the CLS. Because of the rigidity of the carbon fiber structure, the car won’t be needing a B-pillar, which means designers can generally come up with something fancy, such as suicide doors, as seen in the renderings above.
Last year Mercedes signed a deal with Toray, the Japanese producer of advanced carbon fiber materials, and now it becomes clear why. CF has a big role in Daimler’s weight reduction programs and will be used extensively in the upcoming range of cars they have in mind to rival BMW ‘i’ models.
Production of the E superlight will apparently be 20.000 vehicles a year. Mercedes is also working on a new SCS supercar, positioned above the SLS.
Mercedes is yet to comment on this report.
