There is no getting away from the fact that Audi makes some hellishly boring SUVs. The V12 Q7 is cool, but the Q3 and Q5, being in them is like being in math camp. The Germans have realized that, and are trying to fix it by launching hotted-up, high-performance (sort of) models. This is the SQ5 TDI, a 313-hp diesel Q5, unveiled on the eve of the Le Mans 24 Hours race. 

That makes perfect sense, because Audi wouldn’t be the king of the hill in Le Mans if it wasn’t for their high performance diesel engines. They do know how to make powerful oil-burners. The engine in the SQ5 is a 3.0-litre bi-turbo TDI developing 313PS and 650Nm between 1,450 and 2,800rpm. That enormous torque at that rpm means this super crossover can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 155mph.

Being a diesel means it’s also very economical, considering the performance it delivers. Fitted with start-stop system and a regulated oil pump, Audi claims the SQ5 does 39.2 mpg. And don’t worry about the diesel noise. The car has four big sport tailpipes so the soundtrack wouldn’t be bad.

The SQ5 also features a lowered ride height – 30mm lower than the standard version – and 20-inch wheels (21″ available). Visually it gets  platinum grey single-frame grille with its galvanized double bars in an aluminium-look finish, the roof spoiler and the modified bumpers, and new colors – Estoril Blue or Panther Black. Inside the cabin power-adjustable sport seats are leather-upholstered as standard, complementing brushed aluminium inlays.  Inlay options include Carbon Atlas, Piano finish and the new Aluminum/Beaufort wood black trim panels.

The SQ5 Audi goes on sale in October, with prices starting at around £45,000 in the UK.
