Never before has EuroNCAP tested a car as safe as the new Volvo V40. The Swedish hatchback excelled at all four categories of adult occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist, recording a solid 98 percent score in adult protection, which is the highest ever recorded by the institute.

It is quite remarkable considering the size of the V40. The car comes with safety features way beyond what you would expect from a family hatchback, such as auto brake, Pedestrian Detection to shield pedestrians, Lane Keeping Aid which helps the driver stay within his or her lane, and BLIS which helps the driver detect vehicles in the offset rear blind spot. What’s more, a strong body structure gives the V40 the same sort of rigidity as larger cars.

And it’s not just the occupants enjoying great safety either. The V40 is also pedestrian-friendly thanks to its unique pedestrian airbag. Sensors in the front of the car detect any contact with a pedestrian. A pyrotechnical charge releases the bonnet hinges and elevates the bonnet with the help of an airbag. The V40 is also fitted as standard with City Safe system. This is car is currently as safe as hatchbacks get.
