If you are going to buy a new BMW 3 Series in the UK, you better hold on till November and try one of the new models slated to launch then. Mind you, these are all economy-minded, frugal versions of the excellent saloon. If performance and sportiness is your thing, then go ahead right now and get yourself a 328i.

If, however, you are looking for an economy saloon, then you should wait. There is a new 320i coming powered by a 1.6-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine, which generates 170hp and 250Nm of torque, yet delivers 53.3mpg and emits just 124g/km CO2. You simply cannot be more economical, and still do 0 to 60 in 7.6 seconds.

There is also an entry-level 316i, which has a 136hp and 220Nm four-pot, does 0 to 60 in 8.9 seconds and manages 48 mpg with 134g/km CO2. It won’t be very good, but you can have it from £22,850. The better 320 version starts at £25,730.

The new BMW 3 Series Estate is also getting new engine options, including 320i, 318d and 316d. The finest version is the 320i Touring which generates 184hp and 270Nm torque using BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, pushing the car from zero to 62mph in 7.5 seconds, and yet returning 45.6mpg.

As for the diesels, both the BMW 318d Touring and BMW 316d Touring use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The 318 offers 143 hp and 320 Nm, while the smaller 316 is goof for only 116hp and 260Nm torque.

Both models return up to 60 mpg though, so between the two, go for the faster one, the 318d. At £28,280 it is two grand more expensive than the 316d though.
