33 years after the introduction of quattro all-wheel-drive, Audi is celebrating production of the five millionth production car equipped with this system. Over the years Audi has produced 140 quattro variants, which is the biggest range of AWD cars in the world.
The current range of all-wheel-drive cars include Audi Q7, R8, A4 allroad, A6 allroad as well as all S and RS models. But it all started back in 1980s and the original Audi quattro, which also changed the sport of rallying for good.
The first examples of Audi quattro system featured the manual-locking center differential, until 1986 when they replaced it with a Torsen differential. Then in 2005 the system was perfected with asymmetrical, dynamic distribution of the power. There is more electronic interference involved these days, but they do work and that’s what matters.
The five millionth quattro Audi is an A6 Allroad model that recently rolled off the production line at the Neckarsulm plant. To mark the occasion, the A6 joined the original Audi quattro for a celebratory lap of the production plant.
