The latest version of Volkswagen’s diesel-powered hot hatch Golf GTD has been unveiled ahead of global debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The GTD is more in tune with the time than the petrol-powered GTI, as it does more than 60 miles per gallon.
Naturally, the GTD is a bit less powerful than its petrol brother, but still not what you call a slouch. The 2.0-liter common rail turbodiesel in this car makes 184 PS and 380 NM of torque from just 1,750 RPM. It is the low-end torque that sets this car apart, and gives it a 0 to 62 mph time of 7.5 seconds. Top speed is 142 mph.
Visually, Golf GTD is distinguished over normal models with smoked LED rear lights with LED license plate illumination, along with chrome dual tailpipes, 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/45 tyres, side skirts, a rear diffuser, sports suspension and a large roof spoiler.
The interior comes with sporty features too, with the highlights including tartan sports seats, a black rooflining, sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, there is also a GTD-specific gear lever, trim strips and instrument cluster.
The car also excels in terms of standard equipment, as it comes with progressive steering, white ambience lighting, ‘Climatronic’ climate control, front and rear parking sensors and a winter pack.
All these good stuff come at a price. The new VW Golf GTD starts at 29,350 Euros when it goes on sale in Europe next month. These days that kind of money can buy you a proper sports car.
