Ford has said a number of times the next generation Mustang will be getting a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. But until now we thought that was only an entry-level for the European market. The next Mustang is a global model and has to appeal to everyone everywhere. But turns out the US market is getting the 4-banger as well.
While that sound like bad news – because a V8 is the Mustang’s defining feature and a four-cylinder will sully its bloodline – Ford is doing its best not to disappoint the fans. The word is the new four-cylinder EcoBoost will be a 2.3 liter unit developing 300 horsepower, which is the same as today’s Mustang V6.
What; s more, Road&Track reports that there are actually two four-cylinder engines in the works for the next Mustang. One is the aforementioned 2.3 liter unit, and the other, an entry-level 2.0 liter engine straight out of the Focus ST with 250 horsepower.
As long as they keep the V8 option on the list, we don’t care about the rest of the engine lineup.
