Mercedes-Benz models performed exceptionally well at the Motor Klassik Awards 2013, swooping five awards for a number of their luxury vehicles. Readers of the classic car magazine voted for three historic and two current models to win in various categories.
Winning the ‘Classics up to 1930’ award was the Mercedes-Benz SSK. The SSK or Super-Sport-Kurz (which translates to Super Sports Short) is an elegant and popular model in Mercedes-Benz’s infamous S-Series. The six-cylinder compressor sports model was so remarkable that it was the model of choice that helped Rudolf Caracciolo win the European Hill Climb Championship in 1930 and 1931.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing triumphed in the ‘Classics 1947-1961’ category. The gullwing doors marked a milestone in luxury car design, and the model was dubbed the embodiment of a dream vehicle. Based on the W194 racing car, the 300 SL was driven by Paul O’Shea to capture the 1955 and 1956 U.S. road racing class championships.
Stealing an impressive 42 per cent of the vote, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake won the ‘Luxury Segment’ award. Its ultra-sleek appearance, comfort and practicality proved a hit amongst Motor Klassik’s readers, who regarded it as a modern classic.
The CLS Shooting Brake model is available from dealerships and online stores, such as Inchcape Mercedes-Benz, for all fanatics who want a Mercedes-Benz masterpiece.
Proving that they can do more than luxury, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class claimed the top spot in the ‘Off-Roader’ category. The exceptional all-terrain abilities are coupled with quality interiors and innovative driver technology to give this model a distinction in the off-roader market.
Finally, the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K was named the ‘2012 Auction Car’ winner. The model was originally bought in Switzerland by Baroness Gisela von Krieger before it was moved to the United States. After the Prussian aristocrat passed it was left in storage for more than forty years, before being restored. The car was sold in auction in August 2012 at Pebble Beach for a remarkable price of $11.8 million.
