Mercedes Benz officially reveals the new GLA compact SUV ahead of world debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. This premium crossover hints at an upcoming production model that, by the looks of things, is going to take the segment by storm. It seems to have all the bases covered for a perfect urban crossover.

With these cars the most important thing is sexy looks. Check. Then they have to be really fuel efficient. That is not going to be a problem for the GLA, as it is based on the new A-Class platform which doesn’t weigh that much and is powered by a range of very frugal four-cylinder engines. Then there’s the affordability factor. Mercedes gets around that problem by offering different models, from entry-level 2WD diesels, to full-fat 4WD turbocharged AMG version. As for the practical stuff, well, it’s not a pickup truck, but thanks to clever packaging you will be able to go on a camping trips with your mates, no problem at all.

Being a Mercedes, the GLA will also be chock-full of safety and convenience features, namely an all-around view camera system and a super clever COMAND infotainment and navigation unit that reads the road ahead.

The concept GLA is powered y a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 208 horsepower mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. That will make it into the production version. What won’t include some of the fancy styling details such as the door handles or the 20-inch wheels, and probably the  laser beam projectors in the headlights.
