Volkswagen is having another crack at the compact SUV market by bringing a new concept to this year’s Shanghai Auto Show. Judging by the first leaked pictures, the CrossBlue Coupe Concept could be a preview of the next generation VW Tiguan in the same way the 7-seater CrossBlue could be the next Touareg.

With a length of 4.89 meters, a width of 2.0 meters, and a height of 2.98 meters, the CrossBlue Coupe is not that compact after all, but then it will be more practical than most of the offerings in this segment.

The concept version is powered by a petrol-electric hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged V6 engine working with two electric motors to make a combined output of 415 bhp. This great combination gives the SUV a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, while returning 3 liters/100 km or over 94 mpg. It also gives you 20 miles of electric drive.

While this system seems a bit too fancy for the Tiguan, it could be used in another production Volkswagen in the future. The CrossBlue Coupe will be revealed in full later this week.
