Toyota rarely misses a major motor show without introducing a futuristic concept that showcases their latest technological achievements. These concept are usually all about green motoring, and this year’s IAA-bound offering is no exception. Only this time, the concept is a hybrid sports car.
It is called the Hybrid-R, and it is powered by the sort of hybrid system you find in Toyota Racing’s TS030 Hybrid race car in the FIA World Endurance Championship. You probably haven’t heard much about the race car, because it could never beat Audi in any of the competitions it entered. But that powertrain in a road car is definitely a game changer.
To learn about the details of the Hybrid-R we have to wait until a press conference on September 10, but Toyota does reveal that the car has a maximum power output of more than 400bhp (298kW), and that it’s dual mode control allows the car’s performance to be tailored to suit either road or racetrack. Interesting.
