A few weeks ago Audi released the first sketches of a new Concept they’ve been working on for this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Now they can reveal the real thing, called officially the Audi Sport Quattro Concept. It is another effort to come up with a successor to the legendary Quattro of the 80s.
The Quatro is a badge for this car, but as a technology, the four-wheel-drive system has been in use for decades. Audi has sold more than five million cars with the quattro system. The new concept follows the same recipe that made the 80’s car so famous: short wheelbase, permanent AWD, sharp handling, and plenty of power. Only because it is a product of 2013, it has more of everything.
The engine powering the Audi Sport Quattro Concept is a hybrid system that develops a colossal 515 kW (700 hp) and torque of 800 Nm (590.05 lb-ft). In comparison, the original Audi Quattro had 225 kW (306 hp).
The meat of the system is a a four-liter, twin-turbo V8. It produces 412 kW (560 hp) and 700 Nm (516.29 lb-ft), but thanks to the cooperation of the electric motor that comes wit it, average fuel consumption is an astonishing 2.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (94.09 US mpg), a CO2 equivalent of 59 grams per kilometer (94.95 g/mile). What’s more, the Audi Sport quattro concept can cover up to 50 kilometers (31.07 miles) on electric power alone.
Performance-wise, the Audi Sport quattro concept accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 305 km/h (189.52 mph). We will certainly see a version of this magnificent powertrain in some of future Audi production models.
As for the car itself, this 1,850 kilograms (4,078.55 lb), 4.6 meters coupe probably won’t amount to anything more than a technical exercise.
