IAA 2013: Volkswagen e-Golf and e-up!

Volkswagen e Golf and e up 600x400 at IAA 2013: Volkswagen e Golf and e up!

Volkswagen’s range of electric cars at this year;s Frankfurt Motor Show is not limited to concept models. They are now introducing two electric-powered production models: Volkswagen e-Golf and e-up! They belong to different classes, but they are both four-door, fully-equipped cars suitable for everyday use.

Sure, electric cars do have their issues like limited range, shabby performance, and long charging time. But a lot of people would happily live with those drawbacks when they realize that driving 100 km in the e-up! costs only €3.022 and with the e-Golf €3.282.

The Volkswagen e-Golf is powered by a 115 Ps and 270 Nm of torque electric motor. Performance is acceptable, as the car can reach 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 140 km, and that 190 km range is on the par with other production EV hatchbacks.

The Volkswagen e-up! is powered by an 82 Ps version of the same motor. It sprint up to 60 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches 100 km/h within 12.4 seconds. Top speed: 130 km/h. The e-up! has smaller batteries than the Golf, so despite being smaller and slower, it has a shorter range at 160 km.

Living with the Volkswagen e-Golf and e-up! is like living with a normal car as they come with automatic climate control, remote controlled parking heating/ventilation (air conditioning and heating), radio-navigation system, heated windscreen, alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights. The Golf even has full LED headlights.
