There used to be a time when the only four-wheel-drive high performance saloons in the market were made in Ingolstadt by a certain special branch in Audi called RS. But now that AMG is equipping its arsenal with a sophisticated, performance-minded 4MATIC squadron, BMW M decided they should give this AWD thing another thought.
Of course, BMW takes great pride in their loyalty to rear-wheel-drive. But more and more customers are drawn to the sure-footed feel of all-wheel-drive these days, as it allows them to explore the limits of their high-performance machines more easily and more securely.
So being in tune with the time, BMW is considering All-Wheel-Drive for M5 and M6 models in near future. The xDrive, BMW’s nickname for all-wheel-drive, has been on the rise in the Bavarian firm in the past couple of years, making its way even to the 3 Series models. But it is not likely for BMW to cut corners and use an ordinary system for the M5 and M6. Those badges carry too much weight to be messed with like this.
BMW M boss Dr. Friedrich Nitschke has already confirmed the existence of developing a new system for the M5 and M6, and at the same time dismissed the idea of an all-wheel drive M3 and M4. The little ones will remain RWD.
