Looks like Kia is finally going to enter the world of sports car, as they announced the launch of a new 2+2 sports car concept at the next Detroit Motor Show (NAIAS). Not much has been revealed about this concept, but chances are Kia is cooking up a GT86 rival.

Of course, sports cars are something Kia has never done before. But neither were coupes. And they pretty much nailed that segment when they came up with the Forte Koup a few years ago. Well, at least in terms of design. That was a front-wheel-drive sedan dressed as a coupe. It looked good, but that was about it.

The new Kia sports car concept, though, is said to be deliver head-turning looks and superb driving enjoyment on the road or at the track. So it ought to be rear-wheel-drive. We know that Kia has been working on a rear-drive platform for a while now. This car could feature the first application of that system.

With all that in mind, it is highly unlikely that Kia can come up with a proper rival for the Toyota GT86 out of the blue.
