Chevrolet today unveiled a racing version of the new Camaro Z/28 ahead of its track debut during the Rolex 24 endurance race at Daytona. The Camaro Z/28.R shares most of its components with the road-going Z/28. In fact, according to Chevy it will be “the most production-based” car on the track.
The fact that the Camaro Z/28.R racer uses the same engine, aero kit, and even axles as the production car shows what a brilliant sports car that thing really is. After all, this is a car that went round the Nurburgring faster than the Porsche 911.
Camaro Z/28.R features the same exact same aero kit that gives the road-going car its aerodynamic efficiency, consisting of a front splitter, spoiler with wickerbill, Rockers, wheel-house extensions and front tire deflectors, belly pan, and hood extractor vent. You kind of get the feeling the Z/28 was first designed as a race car and then turned into a road-legal road ripper.
The engine in the racer car is also the same familiar LS7 7.0L V-8 that churns out 505 horsepower. Thanks to a helical-gear limited-slip rear differential – also found on the production car – the Z/28.R will be able to put its power down more efficiently, especially when exiting corners.
Camaro Z/28.R race cars will be campaigned by Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge.
