Honda has big plans for this generation of the Civic, and it includes many things from a hot hatch version, to economy models, to a new wagon for Europe, and now a racing car even. The Honda Civic WTCC has been revealed here wearing heavy camouflage, undergoing some track testing prior to its debut.
Next season in the World Touring Car Championship, J.A.S. Motorsport will represent Honda by fielding two Civic WTCC race cars driven by renowned racing drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro. In addition to the factory-backed team, privateers Zengo Motorsport and Proteam Racing are also getting the new Civic.
The test car shown here at Aragon, Spain, reveals that the Honda Civic WTCC is equipped like a DTM car almost, what with the massive fender extensions, the large rear wheels, and the vented bonnet with large intakes to feed the meaty racing engine that rests underneath.
“We achieved four victories and captured the manufacturer’s title last season in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the WTCC, which was our first year of full-participation,” said Honda CEO Takanobu Ito. “In this season, we will strive to win the double title for driver’s and manufacturer’s with a total of four machines including a works team and two private teams.”
