We talk a lot about MPH and HP, but these days it’d be stupid to ignore the importance of fuel economy. So let’s talk some MPG, and we have a dandy conversation starter to get things going: Audi has just launched an e-tron version of the A3 with a mind-boggling 176.6 mpg!

Announced for the UK market, the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is a five-door compact hatchback powered by a 150 horsepower 1.4-litre TFSI unit coupled with a 75kw electric motor. The combined output of this system is a healthy 204 PS and 350 Nm of torque, which once transferred to the ground via a specially developed six-speed S tronic transmission, results in a 0-62 mph sprint of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 137mph.

So as far performance is concerned, Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is on the par with normal family hatchbacks. What sets this car apart is the astonishing fuel economy of 176.6mpg with CO2 emissions of just 37g/km. The car has three hybrid modes and even a full EV mode in which you can travel at up to 80mph for up to 31 miles. Total range is 584 miles.

Plugging the car to a normal socket will charge up the batteries in 4 hours. A special wallbox charger can do the job in two. Just about the only thing wrong with Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is its starting price of £34,950 which is rather dear for this size.
