It is hard to argue with the appeal of a compact, open-top car, especially if it’s rear-wheel-drive. That is why the debut of the new BMW 2 Series Convertible is a happy occasion. It comes in two versions; the powerful 228i and the really powerful M235i, and starts from $38,850.

The BMW 2 Series Convertible 228i itself can be had in two version; rear- or xDrive all-wheel-drive. The latter will cost you about 2 grand more, and unless you live some place where the roads are always slippery, we don’t see the point of it really.

You are better off with the RWD, as it’ll be more fun to drive. The engine in the 228i model is a four-cylinder turbo capable of developing 240hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, it delivers a 0 t 60 time of 5.7 seconds.

If you want real fun though, you have got to get the M235i which comes with a twin-turbo straight-six developing 320 horsepower. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds and can also be ordered with a six-speed manual gearbox. M Sport brakes and variable sport steering are standard on this model.

All BMW 2 Series Convertible models comes with a folding soft-top that opens and closes in 20 seconds and can be operated on the move up to 30 mph. They also benefit from a special design that harks back to BMW’s classic models, mixed with modern elements, and lots of personalization options from the M Performance department.
