On the face of it, a luxury coupe has not much in common with a four-door saloon. But for the same sort of money as a Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe, you can get a Porsche Panamera Turbo S; an awesome driver’s car with four doors and four proper seats, and an abundance of luxury.

Judging by the looks alone, most people choose the handsome Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe. And it’s not just the people of Birmingham being superficial. The Merc is indeed a looker, and not just compared to the Porsche Mingerama. Mechanically too, the S63 can hold its own against the Porsche, what with a 580 hp bi-turbo V8 engine and optional four-wheel-drive. But dynamically, in terms of pure driving sensation, the car with the star on its nose does not hold a candle to the one that looks like a lizard on steroids.
