Finally, after what seems like ages, we get further details, photos and even a video on the new Hyundai IONIQ. The reason this is an important car is because the IONIQ is going to make hybrid motoring mainstream and normal.
There are a few ways in which Hyundai IONIQ is going to further the whole hybrid and green motoring cause. First of all, the car looks the list hybrid-y among the other contenders in this class. It’s not exactly good-looking, but it’s all right for what it is and a lot nicer than something like the Lexus CT 200h. Then there is the size and the price bracket it falls into. It is going to make hybrid motoring possible for a wider chunk of the population.
But the main reason Hyundai IONIQ is a hybrid star is because it is the first car of this type to be offered with a choice of three electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid powertrains. The core of the car’s powertrain system is 1.6 GDI four-cylinder Kappa engine and a 32 kW (44 PS) electric motor, which is fed by an advanced Lithium-Ion polymer battery. They make a total of 104 kW (141 PS) and 265 Nm (27 kg.m) of torque and use a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (6DCT). In electric mode, the car can reach a top speed of 120 km/h.
Hyundai is adamant the IONIQ is also a hoot to drive thanks to various tricks they have implemented in its build, such as low weight, multi-link suspension, advanced electronics, and a nice and sporty interior chockfull of high-end comfort and convenience, not to mention safety, features. The car is salted for European debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
