For those who may find the race-inspired 620R a bit too juicy, Caterham has come up with a new, more tamed version of the Seven. Priced at £44,995, Caterham Seven 620S comes with creature comforts such as a full windscreen, hood and side screens, heater and leather seats.
I know, only Caterham can boast about offering a windscreen, but here we are. What this model is, basically, is an R with some of the carbon fiber parts wrapped in leather and a place for your handbag. That’s about it, really. The ’S’ package can also be ordered, at the princely sum of £2,500 for the wide-bodied S5 chassis.
Mechanically, Caterham Seven 620S is the same as the R, packing a 310bhp two-litre, supercharged Ford Duratec engine, which means it is still hellishly quick. But instead of the R’s sequential gearbox, the S gets a more conventional five-speed manual. It is also worth noting that while the ‘S’ pack features road springs and dampers, the uprated brake master cylinder and limited-slip differential come straight from the R.
The features one would appreciate most in the Caterham Seven 620S include the heated leather seats and the new 15” Orcus anthracite alloy wheels fitted with more road-suited ZZS tyres. They offer a much nicer ride than the R’s 13-inch rims.
