Volkswagen did something unusual with the all-new Polo which they unveiled a few days ago, and that was dumping the whole range all at once. So unlike before and unlike most other models you don’t have to wait another year or so for the high performance variant. The 2018 VW Polo GTI will be available right from launch.

And it is so damn good – at least on paper – that it has thrown VW’s sanity into question. Why would they launch a car that is a direct threat to one of their own best-sellers, the Golf GTI? The only logical answer we can think of is that they are cooking something even juicier for the next top-dog Golf, so it doesn’t matter that the 2018 VW Polo GTI will eat the current version of its big brother alive. Come to think of it, the Golf needs to grow a little power-wise, what with all the 300+ horsepower hot hatches that are coming out there days.

At any rate, the 2018 VW Polo GTI packs a 200 horsepower 2.0-litre TSI (6-speed gearbox / 7-speed DSG) and a sport chassis which can be upgraded to Sport Select chassis. Visually, the car is distinguished by a specially designed bumper with integrated spoiler lip and fog lights, honeycomb vents, optional LED lights, rear spoiler and diffuser, dual tailpipes, 17 inch wheels, and red stripes and high-gloss black accents. The interior highlights include  top sport seats with the legendary ‘Clark’ tartan pattern, a multifunction leather-trimmed sport steering wheel with red stitching, rooflining and roof pillars in black and a GTI gear shift grip.
