Walter Röhrl for Porsche is like Valentino Balboni for Lamborghini. But because Walter is German it means that he is not as mad as Valentino! He is more of a geek, and that makes him the perfect test driver for Porsche! Walter’s good though, he is a double world rally champion. Now at the age of 62, he wants to race again, this time in 2010 24 hours race of Nurburgring, with a stock Porsche 911 GT3 RS!

Now the reason they want to race with a standard Porsche GT3 RS is because they think it is a pure racing car which has just happened to be street legal! In fact according to Herr Röhrl: “Right from the word go, the new 911 GT3 RS reminded me of a race vehicle, No other road-going 911 has ever been as close to a race car as this current GT3 RS. That’s why I’m thrilled to be able to prove that this sports car is up to the challenge of the 24 hour race.”

The GT3 RS is powered by a 450 hp, 3.8-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine which is mated to a manual gearbox with short ratios. The aerodynamics, suspension, and braking systems of the car are also bang on for the business.

“In the last years, Porsche racing vehicles have performed brilliantly at the 24 hour race on the Nürburgring with their speed and extraordinary reliability,” says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “Four times straight, it was the Porsche GT3 RSR that was the vehicle to dominate the overall classification. I’m very pleased to see one of our Weissach-developed road-going vehicles competing parallel to the thoroughbred racers and proving its suitability for long distance competition.”
