Some days ago Opel teased  a new futuristic concept for this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and now they can release details of this car named Flextrme GT-E. Not only this concept showcases Opel’s new technologies regarding green motoring, but also they say it hints at the shape of future models. The GT-E itself seems to be a coupe-like station wagon, which is something new!

The design of this 4.7-meter long and 1.3 meters tall Opel is actually really complex. It has a low hood, mad stubbed C-pillars, rear-hinged doors and lots of glass! And although it has 21-inch wheels, they are wrapped in narrow 195/45 low-resistance tires. Also at speeds above 50 km/h, a vertical panel extends along the body from the air extraction slot behind each rear wheel-arch. These 350 mm-long side spoilers guide high-speed airflow around the rear corners of the car, further reducing the amount of turbulence. It is quite stunning but not necessarily beautiful!

The GT-E uses GM’s E-REV drive system like the Opel Ampera, which means battery-powered driving range of up to 60 km – with zero CO2 tailpipe emissions – and a total range of more than 500 km. Average fuel consumption is estimated at 1.6 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of less than 40 g/km. Still, it can achieve over 200 km/h top speed.

In this system the gasoline engine only acts as a generator to charge the batteries which feed the electric motors. Therefore you driving power is electricity all the time, and like that you get extremely low fuel consumption with good range and you never have to worry about running out of electricity, because you have an onboard generator! This is similar to th system Top Gear guys used in their homemade EV, the Geoff Hammerhead Eaglethrust i 🙂
