Volkswagen released the official pictures and details of the new up!, a car that they think will become a best seller.

The up! will makes its debut at Frankfurt motor show in September, and will be launched in Europe in December. The car will be a direct rival for the Toyota iQ, and like that it tries to accommodate four adults in the smallest space possible.

It measures at 3.54 metres in length and 1.64 metres in width and 1.48 metres in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.42 metres. It also offers 251-litre of boot space with the back seats in place, and 951 litres with them folded.

The new up! comes in three different versions take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort-oriented model and high up! the top version. Weird names but that’s not all! There will also be two editions based on the high up! called up! black and up! white.

As for the engine, and it’s the case with cars like this, it gets a three-cylinder petrol engines with outputs of 60 PS and 75 PS. The BlueMotion Technology 60 PS version (including a Stop/Start system) has combined fuel consumption 4.2 liters /100 km and sub 100 g/km CO2. There are also plans for an up! with electric drive.

The interior has no interesting feature to be honest, and is just lain and simple. It is offered with maps + more system though, which is a a mobile Personal Infotainment Device (PID). Unlike many other similar systems of this type, maps + more melds with the car’s network of systems more effectively: navigation, telephone and infotainment can be controlled and viewed via the maps + more touchscreen, which can also be used to view vehicle information, such as the display of the parking sensors (where fitted).  Apps specially developed for the up! also let users extend maps + more to meet their specific needs.

One other unique feature of the up! is the optional City Emergency Braking system.  It is automatically active at speeds under 18mph, and uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an impending collision.

Pricing for VW up! is yet to be announced.
