Detroit Electric SP:01 Revealed

Following last month announcement, the recently resurrected Detroit Electric now reveals the SP:01, their first production model which is two-seater sports car. Obviously, they are being cautious and decided to follow Tesla’s footsteps, which is why they too based their car on a Lotus.

They picked the Exige, and didn’t even bother with a major facelift. The SP:01 only gets some mild visual changes to make it look unique. The body panels on this car are made of carbon fiber for lightness, and it also features a removable top. The SP has a dry weight of 2,354 lbs or 1,067 kg, which is the main reason it is the fastest production electric car.

The electric motor powering this car is quite mellow, developing the equivalent of only 201 horsepower and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque. In spite of the dismal power output, the SP:01 is said to be capable of going from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 155 mph (255 km/h).

As for the range, boasting a 37 kWh lightweight battery pack the SP:01 can cover a distance of 190 miles (306 km) on one charge. It also needs well over 4 hours to be recharged. So it’s not a car to use on daily basis. Weekends, and recreational purposes, seem more fitting.

The SP:01 is a serious bit of kit though, featuring high performance brakes with Brembo and AP components and regeneration system, and even something called 360 Powerback which apparently turns the car into a power station.

Detroit Electric SP:01 is limited to 999 units and starts at $135,000. Production begins in August.
