Audi is now offering a new version of its A3 Sportback powered by a 184PS and a 380Nm torque 2.0 TDI engine that delivers best-in-class CO2 emissions. This model is also capable of 68.9mpg, and can be fitted with Audi’s latest LED headlights that promises daylight-like illumination.

Audi is particularly proud of these lights. They first become available for three-door A3 and five-door A3 Sportback models, and later on for the A3 Saloon. The clever system can even use GPS data to automatically adjust the headlamp beams for right-hand-drive countries to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. No wonder then they cost £2,000.

We are more interested in the powertrain, which seems to offer a good balance between power and efficiency. The A3 TDI can be had with either front-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox, or quattro all-wheel-drive with the six-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission. The manual model accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds and can reach a 145mph top speed.

As with other Audi models, the Sport or S line models can be specified with either comfort or sports suspension as no-cost options. The latter lowers the ride height between 15 to 25mm depending on the setting.  Prices for the Audi A3 TDI starts from £24,375 and goes up to £30,055.
