In what is almost certainly the first serious, recorded, BMW i8 crash, a Crystal White Pearl example of the hybrid sports car got wrecked in an accident on the German Autobahn. Despite the seriousness of the crash the occupants of the car walked out unharmed, save a slight back pain for one of them.

According to the reports from the scene of the accident, the driver of the BWM i8 was enjoying a good deal of speed on the fast lane when an Audi A3 in the middle lane suddenly decided to overtake a third vehicle. Despite the driver’s efforts, the BMW i8 failed to brake in time and hit the Audi, causing both cars to spin out and meet the guardrails.

As you can see the front-end of the i8 is completely wiped out in the accident, but the rest of the car appear to have suffered only minor damages. Lucky for the occupants of the Bimmer, the combustion engine is located in the back. The crash did however took out the car’s front axle electric motor though. But replacing that is probably easier than having to repair the petrol engine/electric motor combo at the back.

A neat safety feature in the BMW i8 shuts down all the electric systems and discharges the high-voltage battery pack as soon as the airbags go off. You don’t want to survive the initial impact just to get electrocuted by the car!
