According to Inside Line, Mercedes and its performance arm AMG will drop the normally aspirated 6.3 liter V8 next year, in favour of a more efficient 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8. That means less displacement for the sake of less fuel consumption, and using turbochargers to make up the lost power. That is exactly what BMW has done for the new M-powered cars. The 6.3 liter itself replaced the old 5.0 liter supercharged V8 some years ago.
Apparently Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, has confirmed this but didn’t specified any number for the new engine’s horsepower. He has also said that all V8 models in the Mercedes range will be fitted with turbochargers.
Now as far as they don’t compromise on power, it’s all good. A powerful and efficient V8 engine is the best of the both worlds! But at the end of the day, these turbo engines wouldn’t sound as good as that rumbling 6.3 liter. That is pure muscle!
