Renault has finally come up with a car to rival VW Polo BlueMotion. It is the Clio dCi 86 eco2 model which is powered by a 1.4-liter common rail diesel from the dCi series with manages to average an incredible 76.3 mpg while emitting just 98 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This means you get a range of 923 miles between fill-ups!
Renault Clio dCi 86 will be available in both three and five-door variants when it goes on sale in Europe later this year. The engineers have come up with some clever ways for this car’s engine and aerodynamics to lower the fuel consumption and therefore emissions. Some of the features of this dCi engine include:
•Longer gearing across all the transmission ratios: the torque and the flexibility of the dCi 86 allow this to be achieved without any significant impact on performance
•Reduction of frictional losses in the engine and gearbox with the introduction of low-viscosity lubricants
•Dedicated engine mapping focused on reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
They have also tweaked the aerodynamics without changing the car’s funky looks: The flexible lip under front bumper is extended by 15mm, front wheelarches have bigger flaps, and it has a specific underbody enclosure for rear axle. They have also put Michelin 185×60 R15 low energy consumption tires under the car.
And here’s another proof that you don’t necessarily need to buy a hybrid to go green. You can be green with this car without looking like a dork!
