If you are not a car guy the title of this post might not make sense to you, so let us explain! You see AMG is the performance and motorsport arm of Mercedes Benz, just like the M-division for BMW, Quattro for Audi or Mopar for Dodge. Now Volkswagen too wants to have its own in-house tuner, so armed with their R-line know-how, they are setting up the R GmbH.

The new company will be responsible for making the already hot VW models into ultra-hot products. The newly launched Golf R which is based on the GTI model is the starter of this project. Apart from the performance, R will also offer extended customization options and accessories for all models in the range. You can think of it as an evolution of the firm’s R-line.

After the Golf R and the Scirocco R which are basically the same, the other car that is going to get a very nice R treatment is the new Jetta Coupe revealed at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. The Jetta R will probably get the same 270 hp turbocharged 2.0 liter engine as the Golf.
