Norbert Reithofer, BMW CEO, confirmed today during the firm’s Annual Accounts Press Conference that his company will introduce a new NEV(New Energy Vehicle) 5 Series in China. That is the plug-in hybrid version of the long wheelbase 5er for the Asian country.

“A highlight at the Shanghai Motor Show in mid-April will be the presentation of our New Energy Vehicle,” Reithofer said. “This model will be our e-car from China for China – a long version of the BMW 5 Series as a plug-in hybrid. This car will benefit from the strength and the excellent reputation of the BMW brand.”

That’s all the details they’ve provided so far! But based on what we know from BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid, the powertrain might be consisting of the firm’s 300 PS turbocharged in-line six-cylinder 3.0 liter petrol unit and a 50 PS electric motor. The NEV might upgrade those number a little bit and finally confirm its official economy figures.

More details will be released closer to 201 Shanghai Motor Show.
