BMW and ts Chinese ally Brilliance Automotive will introduce a new plug-in hybrid vehicle based on the 2011 long wheelbase BMW 5 Series, specifically developed for Chinese market.

This New Energy Vehicle as they call it, will be the base for the future development of a Chinese new energy vehicle in the premium segment. The car is powered a hybrid system consisting of BMW TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine and an electric motor. The innovative concept also includes special battery technology which includes the possibility of charging from a mains power supply.

As for the facts and figures, this 5 Series hybrid is capable of traveling emission-free for up to 75 kilometres with top speed of 60 km/h. With the internal combustion engaged, it can cover a minimum additional range of 400 kilometres. The TwinPower engine makes 160 kW and the electric motor delivers a healthy 70 kW.

This figures might change in the final produciton version, which will be built in China in 2013.
