To make the 640d even more complete BMW is now offering a four-wheel-drive xDrive version of the diesel-powered Grand Tourer.

BMW 640d is the best car in the world right now, and we do mean that. Sure, a Veyron is faster, a Lamborghini is more exciting to look at, and a Range Rover is better in a field, but none of them offer such a complete package as this 6-Series.

The 640d is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged in-line six-cylinder unit producing 313hp at 4,400rpm and 630Nm of torque from only 1,500rpm.

That doesn’t sound very interesting, but it does zero to 62mph in 5.5seconds before topping out at an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, all the while managing 51.4mpg (about 5.5 liter in 100 km) on the combined cycle and record CO2 emissions of 145g/km. That is an extraordinary achievement.

What’s more, it’s a BMW, which means it drives beautifully, and is better engineered than the space shuttle. Now with the xDrive perk it becomes more grippy and easier to drive in tricky conditions, but truth be told, you don’t really need AWD in a well-balanced coupe.

The rear drive 640d is priced at £62,080 in the UK. The xDrive will be a few grands more than that.
