Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year, the new diesel powered Volkswagen Beetle goes on sale in America this summer to introduce the Yanks to new ways of saving money on fuel. The Beetle TDI – according to new VW data – does 32 mpg city and above 40 mpg highway (with manual gearbox). It also delivers 140 horsepower, and has a base price of $23,295 plus a $770 destination charge.

If you are wondering about the automatic version, that runs for $24,895, not including the destination charge. The mpg rating might be very impressive, but the 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection Clean Diesel engine that makes 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque isn’t really. But that doesn’t really matter, because no one interested in sport and performance would even consider buying one of these.

There are three VW Beetle TDI Clean Diesel trim lines: TDI; TDI with Sunroof; and TDI with Sunroof, Sound, and Navigation. All three are very well equipped, with standard features such as power windows with one-touch up/down; cruise control; V-Tex Leatherette seating; the kaeferfach secondary glovebox; Bluetooth; a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with audio controls; three auxiliary gauges; Keyless entry with push-button start; and a Media Device Interface with iPod cable.
