News broke that Hyundai is hard at work developing an all-new sporty mid-size sedan to take on the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class with. This – Hyundai taking on BMW – might sound funny to some people, especially Europeans, but let’s not forget the Koreans have proved they know their way around rear-drive cars. We’re talking about the Genesis and its Coupe version.
And that, according to Auto News, is the base for the new sports saloon known internally as the ‘RK’. The car will be based on a modified version of the same platform used for the Genesis sedan and coupe. Mind you, the new model is due in 2015, which means if by then the Genesis gets new or upgraded underpinnings, the RK would benefit from that too.
Hyundai’s sports sedan will be built as a global model with both left and right-hand-driver versions available, and not like the Genesis which is only offered in a few countries. There is no details yet on what kind of powetrains the new car will be using, but it’s highly unlikely for it to get the same 350 horsepower V6 as found in the Genesis. It would give the RK enough power to rival the 3er, but economy-wise, it doesn’t make much sense.
