Following the Astra GTC, Vauxhall is now offering its high-performance BiTurbo diesel engine in the Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer as well. The 195PS and 400 Nm torque diesel unit will make the Astra Tourer the most powerful diesel-powered estate in its class. Prices start from £24,095 for the Hatch and from £25,110 for the Sports Tourer.
The BiTurbo diesel engine will enable both models to make 60mph from standing still in about 8 seconds and reach a atop speed of 135 mph. Those are acceptable figures, especially when you realize you get 55.4mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 134g/km.
The engine uses a sequential turbocharging system, with the smaller turbo accelerating quickly at lower speeds to eliminate ‘lag’, providing 320Nm of torque from 1,250rpm. When you go past 3,000rpm, a bypass valve flicks open and engages the larger turbo, giving you all it’s got. This way you only use the engine full potential when needed, and save fuel when cruising. Start/Stop system is also fitted as standard.
The Astra recently got a couple of styling tweaks as well, including a revised front grille, new front indicators and fog lamps, and refreshed rear-panel styling. Both BiTurbo models come with an array of unique features including 18” alloy wheels, twin rear exhausts, exterior styling pack and alloy sports pedals.
