As you know, the most powerful version of the Mazda MX-5 you can buy today – at least in Britain – is the 2.0 liter model with 160 hp (158 bhp). Some say that’s enough for the MX-5, because it’s an excuse to rev the nuts off it, and that’s very enjoyable in a sports car. Some other say it’s not enough and the MX-5 Could do with a few more horses.
For the second group, BBR has come up with the Super 180 tuning package.
Suitable for MX-5 Mk3 / 3.5 models from 2005 onwards, this thorough engine upgrade program adds 22 bhp & 20 lb.ft of torque, for a total output of 180 bhp and 159lb.ft. You still have to rev the engine hard if you want to go anywhere, as the torque stars to arrive from 4,250 rpm, which is fairly high.
The core of Super 180 package is the BBR StarChip ECU remap. It is complemented with a complete set of stainless steel sport exhaust system, consisting of stainless steel 4 into 1 exhaust manifold, 2.5 inch stainless steel exhaust centre section with high flow metallic sports cat and centre silencer, and stainless steel rear silencer with adjustable 3.5 inch BBR branded tailpipes. Th engine is also fitted with a high flow BBR performance panel air filter in standard Mazda airbox.
With these mods we kind of expected more than 22bhp, but even that will set you back £1995 installed. There’s a DIY version as well, available at £1895.
