Instead of changing the looks of the iconic G-Wagen and modernizing it for today’s world, Mercedes is going to launch the GLG, a baby G-Wagen that is set to take the crossover market by storm. Size-wise, the car will be similar to the upcoming Land Rover Defender, but styling will be heavily inspired by the G-Class.
The GLG will be based on the same platform as the new Mercedes A Class. It will be more chiseled and more aerodynamic than the big G, but it retains that car’s boxy styling as a party piece. It will get the same range of engines as the current A-Class. Four-wheel-drive with all sort of electronic off-road technologies will be available.
The GLG, or mini-G, is not the only crossover vehicle to be launched by Mercedes over the next few years. There is the GLA crossover, also based on the MFA platform that underpins the new A-Class. While the mini-G is going to have proper off-road capabilities, the GLA will be more of an urban cruiser – it’ll be a jacked-up A-Class, if you will.
The idea of a smaller G-Class with a funky design and good off-road capabilities is hugely appealing, especially if they make an AMG version of it.
