Utilizing their MQB platform, Volkswagen is going to make a new small crossover based on the Polo hatchback to take on cars like the Nissan Juke and MINI Countryman. They had shown their interest in this segment before by making the CrossCoupe concept. Audi too is developing a similar car, previewed at the Paris Motor Show 2012 as the Q2.
So we know what this new car will, roughly, look like, and we know what kind of underpinnings it possess. And it sounds like quite a recipe. Volkswagen is apparently going to offer different versions of this car for different markets.
There will be a basic model for emerging markets, while the European models will be more posh and premium. Same goes for the technical specs. Basic versions will be two-wheel-drive, while the more expensive models will benefit from four-wheel-drive.
The new Polo-based SUV is not the only utility vehicle in the pipeline. VW needs to expands its range of SUVs, so there will be two more cars, including an Up-based crossover, coming over the next few years. some of them might appear as concept cars at the next Detroit auto show.
