Chevrolet released the first details of the electric version of the Spark ahead of its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Chevy Spark EV is a pure electric car – no hybrid or range extender – and will be priced under $25,000. It gives Nissan LEAF yet another reason to be worried about its future.

Spark EV is powered by a GM-built electric drivetrain, consisting of a coaxial drive unit and electric motor that together deliver 130 hp (110 kW) and 400 lb.-ft. (542 Nm) of torque. That power gives the car a 0 to 60mph acceleration time of under 8 seconds, which is pretty good for a small electric car.

The car also has a 560-pound (254 kg) square lithium-ion battery pack with a volume of 133 liters, comprising 336 prismatic cells. Normally it’d take seven hours to be charged, but using the optional SAE Combo DC Fast Charge you can get it up to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.

The electric Spark also features some unique styling details to be distinguished over normal models, and comes in EV-style colors such as Electric Blue, Black Granite, Summit White, Silver Ice and Titanium. The rest of it, however, is like a normal Spark. It even gets Chevy’s MyLink Radio Infotainment thingy and two reconfigurable, high-resolution, seven-inch color LCD screens, including a confidence gauge that shows the expected driving range based on driving habits and other conditions.

So, at least on paper, the Spark EV seems like a formidable contender for the fast growing electric city car segment. It is not perfect; it takes long hours to charge up and the range probably sucks too, but that’s the way electric cars are these days.
